Thank you to all who support our work through contributions, volunteering, joining our CSA, or spreading the word of good food – local and sustainable!

Nashville Urban Harvest is a community driven, non-profit group working to build sustainable food systems in Nashville, Tennessee, and surrounding environs. We seek ways to align our core values through public action: education for food justice, creation of markets to support local producers, and production of food on urban green space, all with an eye toward sustainable, local, community-supported agriculture and action.

2010 Saturday volunteer sessions have begun, please join our listserv for details. Spring hours will typically be 11-2, transitioning to earlier times as the weather gets hotter! Spring and Summer work includes mulching the farm beds,PLANTING!, weeding, watering, making compost and all the other typical farm work. Please dress for work in the outdoors, including sneakers or boots, gloves and a hat in summer! If you have gardening tools you are encouraged to bring these as well, labeled with your name.

We will not be hosting a CSA for the 2010 year. The property where our community farm is located is up for sale and this makes us unable to commit to our shareholders for an entire season. However, we are still planing dozens of amazing fruits and vegetables and hosting volunteer sessions on a regular basis. What this meas? More veggies for volunteers and giving away! Join our listserv to find out where we will sell some of the produce or to get our weekly harvest report. Likely pickups for produce will be Saturday mornings at the farm. If you are interested in buying the property or joining a community effort to co-own the building, please be in touch.

Nashville Urban Harvest envisions a food secure society where all persons have access to fresh, healthy, and local foods, without having to make an untenable choice between food and other pressing concerns, such as rent or mortgage, car payments, etc. In 2005, the USDA reported that 35.1 million Americans, 22.7 million adults and 12.4 million children, were food insecure. These staggering figures, coupled with a passion for sustainable agriculture within Metro Nashville, drive our organization to develop programs that produce food, educate for sustainable, local foods and markets, and advocate for justice for both the farmer and the consumer.
